New Zealand Online Gambling Tax Laws: 2026 Update

As part of the Online Casino Gambling Bill, New Zealand has implemented a comprehensive tax framework for 2026. This system ensures that revenue from online play is captured onshore to fund local services while keeping the experience fair for punters.

1. The 16% Online Casino Duty

Beginning 1 January 2027, all licensed online casino operators in New Zealand will pay a 16% duty on gross gambling revenue. This is a significant increase from the initial 12% offshore duty introduced in 2024.

Tax TypeRate & Details
Online Casino Duty16% (increasing from 12% on Jan 1, 2027).
GST15% Goods and Services Tax on all gambling revenue.
Problem Gambling Levy1.24% payable by operators starting 1 Dec 2026.

2. Community Returns (The 4% Ringfence)

The 4% increase in duty is strictly “ringfenced” for community returns. These funds are distributed by the Lottery Grants Board to support grassroots sports, marae, and community initiatives. This ensures that even if players move from physical pokies to online casinos, community funding is protected.

3. Are Player Winnings Taxed?

No. In New Zealand, gambling winnings are considered windfall gains and are 100% tax-free for casual players. All tax obligations are the responsibility of the licensed operator.
