New Zealand online casino licence tracker: 2026 status

Updated 24 September 2026. New Zealand has not yet published a register of licensed online casinos under the new regime. DIA expects to begin issuing licences from early 2027. This page tracks the official process; an expression of interest or an auction result is not a licence. We do not list a brand as a confirmed applicant or licensee without a dated, verifiable primary source.

Current status

  • 17 July–14 August 2026: the expression-of-interest period ran and DIA assessed submissions.
  • 29 September 2026: the auction is scheduled for eligible operators. Up to 15 successful bidders can win the right to apply.
  • October 2026: full licence applications are expected to open for successful bidders.
  • 1 December 2026: operators that have not applied must cease providing online casino gambling in New Zealand. Operators with an application under consideration may continue without advertising until DIA decides.
  • Early 2027: DIA expects to begin issuing licences and publish a register of licensed operators.

Dates and outcomes can change. The DIA provider timeline and DIA player guidance are the sources for current status.

How many licences are available?

Up to 15 licences will be available, each covering one brand. The process includes an expression of interest, auction for the right to apply, and suitability assessment. DIA says no one may be granted more than three licences. A successful auction bid does not establish that an operator meets licensing standards.

How to verify an operator

Until DIA issues licences and publishes its public register, do not rely on “licensed in NZ” labels, overseas licence seals, or lists of supposed applicants as proof of a New Zealand licence. Check the official register when available. Operators providing services during the transition are not necessarily licensed under the new Act. Online casino advertising to New Zealand customers is currently prohibited, according to DIA.

Sports betting is separate

Online racing and sports betting in New Zealand is regulated separately. DIA says it is prohibited unless operated by TAB NZ or its brands. A casino licence would not itself authorise ordinary sports or racing betting.
