Age and identity checks for NZ online casinos: 2026 guide

New Zealand has enacted identity and age verification requirements for licensed online casino operators, but the Department of Internal Affairs expects to start issuing licences in early 2027. This page explains the coming licensed framework without assuming that any current offshore site is already New Zealand licensed.

What the rules require

The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 requires operators to ensure gamblers are at least 18. Regulations 15 to 17 of the Online Casino Gambling Regulations 2026 cover the identity information operators collect, verification and access requirements. Operators must follow those requirements when they operate under a New Zealand licence. DIA says the licensing system is being introduced in stages and that the first licences are expected in early 2027.

What might you need to provide?

A gambling provider may ask for your legal name, date of birth and evidence of identity. The exact documents and verification process depend on the operator’s compliant process. We cannot confirm that every provider accepts a particular document, uses RealMe, or requires a selfie or “liveness” scan. Follow the site’s published privacy and verification notices, and check that the website belongs to the operator you intend to use before submitting identity documents.
