Sports betting in New Zealand: rules and guides for 2026

Reviewed 25 September 2026. New Zealand’s racing and sports betting rules changed on 28 June 2025. The Department of Internal Affairs says TAB NZ is the only betting operator permitted to offer racing and sports bets to New Zealand customers. This is distinct from the staged online casino licensing regime.

Sports betting and casino games follow different laws

The Racing Industry Amendment Act 2025 inserted the prohibition on other operators offering racing and sports betting to people in New Zealand. See our TAB NZ explainer and Act guide.

Online casino games have a separate framework under the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026. DIA expects to start issuing up to 15 online casino licences from early 2027. Those are casino licences, not sports betting licences. No 15-site licensed casino list exists for September 2026. Rules about the licensed casino duty and credit-based payment methods should not be applied wholesale to TAB NZ sports betting.
