Darts Betting in New Zealand: Legs, Sets and Odds
Darts betting can cover a short match, a full tournament or individual scoring events. The first step is to read the format: a race to a number of legs differs from a sets match, and the same player can have different chances in each format.
Online sports betting in NZ
Under the Racing Industry Amendment Act 2025, TAB NZ is the permitted provider for online sports and racing betting in New Zealand. The Department of Internal Affairs explains the policy. Online casino licences, when granted, relate to casino games rather than darts markets.
Common darts markets
- Match winner: select the player who wins the match. Check the event format and retirement rules.
- Correct score: predict the exact leg or set score. A 6–4 result is different from 6–5.
- Handicap: a leg or set adjustment is applied to one player for settlement. Verify whether the line refers to legs or sets.
- Most 180s: compare the maximum scores hit by the players. Check how ties and non-finishers are handled.
- Highest checkout: a checkout is the score finished in a single visit to win a leg. Read whether the market covers a player or the whole match.
- Outright winner: predict a tournament champion. Withdrawals and changes to the draw can affect the bet.
Odds and format
Decimal odds include the returned stake. A successful $10 stake at 2.40 returns $24 in total, a $14 profit. The implied probability is about 1 ÷ 2.40 before the bookmaker margin. The price is not a guarantee. Check the current market and price on the bet slip before confirming.
A shorter format allows fewer legs for a stronger player to recover from a poor start. For a PDC event, verify the official schedule, format and player participation. Past 180s or checkout averages provide context but cannot ensure a future outcome. Live odds can shift after every leg, so avoid rushing a selection while the board updates.
Settlement and safer play
Before wagering, confirm whether a market needs the full match to be completed and what happens after a postponement or walkover. Payment methods and identity checks depend on the provider’s current terms. Set an affordable limit and do not chase losses. Safer Gambling NZ offers help, or call 0800 654 655. Betting is for adults 18 and over.
