New Zealand sports betting guide: law, odds and risk
Reviewed 25 September 2026. This guide explains the current New Zealand sports and racing betting rule and basic odds concepts. It does not recommend an offshore sportsbook or claim that online casino licences allow sports betting.
Who can offer sports betting?
Since 28 June 2025, TAB NZ is the only operator permitted to take or promote racing and sports bets from people in New Zealand, according to the Department of Internal Affairs. The legal change is in the Racing Industry Amendment Act 2025. An overseas licence or a planned NZ casino application does not override this restriction.
Online casino games are governed by a different Act and phased licensing process. DIA expects the first online casino licences in early 2027. Those licences do not grant permission to offer live sports or racing bets. See our TAB NZ explainer.
Understanding decimal odds
Decimal odds show the potential total return per unit staked, including the original stake, if the selection wins. For example, a $10 stake at 2.50 would return $25 in total, a $15 profit, before any applicable adjustments or deductions. An implied probability of 2.50 is 1 ÷ 2.50, or 40%. A bookmaker’s margin means quoted probabilities across all outcomes typically add to more than 100%.
Common bet types
- Head-to-head: choose the winner of a specified event or match under the provider’s settlement rules.
- Handicap: a virtual adjustment to a team’s score for settlement.
- Total points: a wager on the combined score being over or under a line.
- In-play: a bet placed while the event is underway; prices and availability can change rapidly.
