AFL betting in New Zealand: rules and market basics
Reviewed 25 September 2026. Australian rules football wagers are sports bets under New Zealand law. This guide covers the current NZ provider rule and common AFL market terms, without presenting past prices as current offers.
Who may offer AFL betting in NZ?
The Department of Internal Affairs says TAB NZ has been the only operator permitted to provide racing and sports bets to New Zealand customers since 28 June 2025. The Racing Industry Amendment Act 2025 applies to other operators whether based inside or outside NZ. Check the provider’s current AFL markets and terms directly.
Online casino gambling follows a separate law. DIA expects to begin issuing up to 15 online casino licences from early 2027. An auction place or future casino licence does not authorise AFL betting. See the DIA timetable for changes.
Common AFL markets
- Head-to-head: select a match winner. Confirm settlement rules for a draw or changed fixture.
- Line: a points handicap applies to the selected team. Check the exact line and what happens if the adjusted result ties.
- Total points: select above or below a stated combined score; verify the market’s included period.
- Player markets: goals or other named statistics. Check whether the player must start or merely participate.
- Futures: a longer-term outcome such as a premiership. Terms for withdrawal or abandoned competition matter.
Team selection, injuries, venue and weather can affect past form. Compare the same market and period when assessing an offered price. In-play markets change quickly; a displayed price is not guaranteed until accepted. No market is a reliable way to earn money.
Payments and support
Read the provider’s current payment, identification and withdrawal terms. Do not apply casino payment rules or online casino duty to all AFL bets. Inland Revenue distinguishes sports and racing profits liable for point-of-consumption charges in its online gambling duty calculation. Our sports betting guide explains odds and limits.
