Cricket betting in New Zealand: 2026 rules and markets
Reviewed 25 September 2026. Cricket betting is sports betting under New Zealand law. This guide explains the current provider rule and how to read common cricket markets. It does not promise winning tips or current odds.
Who may offer cricket bets to NZ customers?
The Department of Internal Affairs says TAB NZ has been the only operator permitted to provide racing and sports betting to New Zealand customers since 28 June 2025. The relevant change is the Racing Industry Amendment Act 2025. An overseas bookmaker may not offer cricket bets to people in NZ merely because it holds another country’s licence.
The online casino licensing system is separate. DIA has scheduled a casino auction for 29 September 2026 and expects casino licences from early 2027. No NZ online casino licence has been issued under that process, and a future casino licence would not authorise ordinary cricket betting.
Cricket markets and settlement
- Match result: check whether a draw, tie, no result or shortened match has a separate outcome under the market rules.
- Total runs: confirm whether the line covers an innings, a team or the whole match, and how revised overs are handled.
- Player performance: check the named player, participation requirements and settlement treatment if a player does not bat or bowl.
- In-play: prices may change during a delivery or be suspended. Confirm the accepted price and stake before submitting a bet.
Weather, toss, pitch, playing XI and match format can change the context for past form. Check the competition’s official scorecard and provider settlement rules for abandoned or shortened games. Statistics help describe previous matches but do not guarantee future results.
Payments and tax claims
Check TAB NZ’s current funding and withdrawal options directly, including identity checks and fees. Do not apply online casino payment restrictions or offshore online gambling duty figures as blanket cricket-betting rules. Inland Revenue distinguishes profits subject to point-of-consumption charges in its online gambling duty calculation. Our sports betting guide explains the distinction between casino and sports rules.
Safer gambling: Bet only if you are at least 18, set an affordable limit and do not chase losses. For support, visit Safer Gambling NZ or call 0800 654 655.
