Free bets in New Zealand: terms, risks and rules
Reviewed 25 September 2026. “Free bet” is a marketing label, not a promise that you cannot lose money. A credit may be restricted to specific markets, require a deposit, expire quickly, or exclude the original stake from returns. Read the complete terms before treating any offer as valuable.
Sports offers and online casino offers are different
For sports and racing betting, DIA says TAB NZ is the only operator permitted to provide these products to New Zealand customers since 28 June 2025. A casino bonus or overseas sportsbook licence does not change that rule. The online casino licensing process is separate and DIA expects first licences in early 2027. See DIA’s player guidance.
Terms to inspect
- Eligibility: age, residence, existing-customer restrictions and identity checks.
- Trigger: whether a deposit or qualifying wager is required before a credit appears.
- Stake treatment: whether the original free-bet stake is returned with any win.
- Odds and markets: minimum odds, excluded events, games or bet types.
- Expiry and withdrawal: use-by date, wagering requirements, maximum conversion or withdrawal limits.
For example, if a $10 free-bet stake is not returned, a winning bet at decimal odds of 2.00 might pay $10 rather than $20. The provider’s actual terms control the result. A bonus can encourage further paid gambling, so decide whether you would place the underlying bet without the offer.
Advertising and safer play
New Zealand has restrictions on gambling advertising, including online casino advertising guidance for third parties. An advertised offer is not evidence of a New Zealand licence or regulator approval. Set a budget and avoid chasing losses or wagering to meet a promotion.
