NFL betting in New Zealand: rules and market basics

Reviewed 25 September 2026. NFL wagers are sports bets under New Zealand law. This guide explains the authorised-provider rule and common American football markets. It does not list live odds or recommend a selection.

Who may offer NFL bets in NZ?

From 28 June 2025, DIA says TAB NZ is the only operator permitted to provide racing and sports betting to New Zealand customers. The relevant law is the Racing Industry Amendment Act 2025. The prohibition also applies to offers from offshore operators. Verify the provider and current market rules before betting.

The online casino licence process is separate. DIA expects to start issuing casino licences in early 2027. No NZ online casino licence has yet been issued under that process, and casino licences will not confer permission to offer ordinary NFL bets.

Understand the market before placing a bet

  • Moneyline: select a game winner, usually including overtime unless terms say otherwise.
  • Point spread: a handicap is added to or subtracted from a team’s score for settlement. Check the exact line and push rules.
  • Total points: select over or under a stated combined score. Check overtime treatment.
  • Player props: a named player’s yards, receptions or touchdowns. Review participation requirements and official-stat corrections.
  • Futures: a season or championship selection settled later. Check what happens if a team or player withdraws.

Injury reports, starting quarterbacks, rest days and weather can change the context for previous results. In-play prices move quickly and markets can be suspended. Confirm the price accepted by the provider and the total stake on any multi-selection bet. There is no guaranteed return.

Payment and tax checks

Use the provider’s current terms for accepted funding methods, identity checks, fees and withdrawals. Do not treat rules for online casino deposits as a blanket ban on all sports-betting payments. IRD’s online gambling duty page excludes profits liable for point-of-consumption charges from that duty calculation. Our sports betting guide explains the separate regimes.
