Android betting in New Zealand: 2026 guide
Reviewed 25 September 2026. A betting app on an Android phone is only a way to access an operator. The operator and product determine which New Zealand rules apply. Google Play availability or a downloaded APK is not a New Zealand gambling licence.
Sports betting on Android
DIA says TAB NZ is the only betting operator permitted to provide sports and racing betting to New Zealand customers since 28 June 2025. An offshore sportsbook app cannot rely on a future online casino licence to offer sports bets. See our TAB NZ rules guide.
Online casino apps
The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 creates a separate licensing process for up to 15 casino operators. DIA expects the first licences in early 2027. Neither an app-store listing nor an overseas licence proves that an app has NZ online casino approval. Do not rely on a list of “official 2026 licensed apps” without a current regulator source.
App installation and payments
Check the app publisher and its website. Avoid installing an APK from an unsolicited message or unknown download site. Read the permissions requested, update your device, use account security options and keep payment credentials private. Google Pay may be funded by different methods; its name alone does not establish compliance with the licensed casino payment restrictions. The provider’s actual terms and funding method matter.
Safer play
Read deposit and withdrawal conditions, set a budget and consider disabling promotional notifications. A fingerprint sign-in does not guarantee a fair game, a fast payout or regulatory approval. For help with gambling harm, visit Safer Gambling NZ or call 0800 654 655.
