Betting Apps NZ 2026: Licence and Safety Checks

Betting apps in New Zealand: 2026 checks

Reviewed 25 September 2026. An app-store listing, biometric login or mobile payment option does not establish that a betting operator may offer its products to New Zealand customers. Check the product and operator separately.

Sports and racing apps

Since 28 June 2025, TAB NZ is the only operator permitted to offer racing and sports betting to people in New Zealand, according to the Department of Internal Affairs. The TAB NZ rule applies whether a wager is placed in a browser or an app. An offshore app’s availability in a store is not evidence that it is authorised for NZ sports betting.

Online casino apps

The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 provides a separate process for up to 15 casino licences. DIA expects first licences from early 2027. No app should be labelled an official NZ licensed casino app without checking the current regulator record. The 2026 regulations contain requirements for licensed casino operators, including customer protection, verification and payment restrictions. They do not guarantee that any particular app supports Face ID, instant cash out, live streaming or a named payment service.

Check an app before installing

  • Identify the legal operator and check its current status for the product it offers.
  • Use the operator’s verified site or official app-store listing; inspect the publisher name and permissions.
  • Read current withdrawal, deposit, privacy and customer support terms.
  • Consider using a mobile browser if you do not need an installed app, but apply the same checks to the operator.
  • Set a spending and time limit and disable marketing notifications if they encourage unwanted play.
