Horse Racing Betting NZ | Odds, Tote and TAB Guide

Horse Racing Betting in New Zealand

Horse racing markets can be read more clearly by separating fixed odds from totalisator (tote) pools. In New Zealand, TAB NZ is the only operator permitted to offer sports and racing betting under the rules effective from 28 June 2025. Check the current operator information with the Department of Internal Affairs before placing a bet.

Fixed odds and tote pools

A fixed-odds price is set when a bet is accepted, subject to the bet terms. A tote dividend depends on the money in the pool and winning selections; displayed estimates can change until the pool closes. Read the market rules for withdrawals, deductions, dead heats and each-way terms.

Compare a race before betting

  • Check the official race card, track conditions, distance, barrier and recent form.
  • Compare the displayed price with the chance you estimate, remembering that no form factor guarantees an outcome.
  • Check stake limits, the closing time and the final bet slip before confirming.

Our horse racing tips guide explains form and common markets. See the tote guide for pool mechanics and the sports betting guide for current NZ provider rules.

Set limits

Bet only with money you can afford to lose. Set a spending limit and take a break if betting stops being enjoyable. Gambling Helpline NZ is available on 0800 654 655. 18+.
